1.1. Administrating the Proxmox VE Cluster

This section contains documentation for admins on how to use the PVE GUI.

Here you can log-in through three auth types, as long as you have the required credentials:
  • LDAP/AD (Does not allow shell usage, system can be modified to allow this by joining the physical node to domain)

  • Proxmox VE Authentication Server (Does not allow shell usage)

  • Linux PAM Standard Authentication

1.1.2. Access through IP Address

The auth methods are the same as the previous header section.

1.1.4. Physical Host Control and Usage

To perform an action with a PH (Physical Host) select it on the side-bar view and the following options will appear on the secondary nav-bar.

You’ll then be able to use the options

  • Reboot

  • Shutdown

  • Shell

  • Bulk Actions → [ Bulk Start | Bulk Stop | Bulk Restart / Bulk Migrate ]

If you right-click on the PH in the side-bar list you’ll get a menu with the same options.

1.1.5. VM/CT Control and Usage

To perform an action with (or modify) a VM (Virtual Machine) or CT (Container) select it on your side-bar view and the following options will appear on the secondary nav-bar.

  • Start

  • Shutdown | Reboot | Stop

  • Migrate (Only appears if cluster nodes are >= 2)

  • Console | SPICE | xTerm.js

Note

To migrate a VM/CT both nodes (origin and target) must have the same storage available, otherwise the migration (Cold or Live) will fail. In cases where this is not possible you’ll have to create a backup LZO file and copy it with SCP or RSYNC.

1.1.6. Backup and Snapshots

To backup a VM/CT click on it in the side-bar menu, then go to Backup → Backup Now

../../../_images/pve-vm-ct-backup.png

To make a Snapshot go to the Snapshot menu and click on Take Snapshot

1.1.7. Uploading an ISO

To upload an ISO go to a storage that supports ISO files and click Upload.
